The University has an initiative which is effectively summarised by its title: ‘Belong at Bath’. I believe BUBC to be a prime example of how this initiative materialises.

Before university, I was heavily involved in the world of competitive swimming. However, it was when I started rowing as a novice that I began enjoying the long training hours and early mornings—a routine I should have been so accustomed to. Being welcomed into our diverse and extensive rowing family is what flipped the switch from “training being a chore” to “training being a hobby”.

Over the past few years, the men’s squad has struggled to find its footing. However, having stepped into the role of captaincy and working with our new head coach, we’ve seen an increase in hunger for “putting Bath back on the path” to success—a goal that is very much achievable with the huge potential the squad offers.

Rowing is an expensive sport. As students, this can place a significant burden on many of our members’ wallets. Without BUBC’s work towards making rowing affordable, many of our members (including myself) would not have been able to take up the sport. However, this also makes it challenging for the club to generate the revenue required to maintain and develop our equipment and facilities.

I’m proud of what I’ve done at BUBC, and what BUBC has done for me—taking me from a complete novice rower to someone who could have an exciting and high-level rowing career ahead of them. That has been the story for many of our rowers, as BUBC allows them to get out as much as they put in.
